Murphy Living March 2025

After losing her job due to the fires, Lisa turned her focus to
opening Indigo Mountain Traders, a creative market offering
handcrafted items from local and American-based companies,
with a special emphasis on women-owned businesses that give
back to their communities. The store is home to the area’s only
custom hat bar, where Lisa, a certifed Hat Master, shapes and
restores hats, bringing a unique touch to the local business scene.
From Tragedy To Triumph In Murphy

In 2013, Lisa Meadows and her husband, Gene, sold a couple of businesses and moved from Florida to Hawaii. While in Maui, she took an enjoyable job with a short-term rental company and a position as the chief operating officer, where she stayed for eight years.
During COVID, she and Gene moved to Murphy after purchasing their home in 2019, sight unseen. Their plan was to travel between Hawaii and Murphy.
As a result of the pandemic, her employer suggested she remain in Murphy, as they were going to be closing Maui down. In May 2020, they took one of the last flights out.
#78 | - Lisa and Gene Meadows Entrepreneurial and Adventurous Kindred Spirits

Lisa and Gene met in Tennessee and immediately found their compatibility groove. Gene is the stable “wind beneath the wings” and gives Lisa her space to plunge into a variety of business ventures. Growing up around horses and generations of Hat Masters fueled Lisa’s love for western wear. Coupled with her entrepreneurial spirit, Lisa has had numerous opportunities to spread her wings all over the country… including Hawaii, where she and her family were personally affected by the Lahaina Fires of 2023. They moved back to the continental 48 where they found a home in Murphy, NC. They opened and currently run Indigo Mountain Traders; an ecclectic store that features some local artisans’ work along with Lisa’s own hat creations. Follow their journey through victory, loss, and making lemonade out of life’s lemons.
